Anti-theft hardware / Tamper-Resistant Screws by Nortek
What it is...
Anti‑theft hardware / Tamper‑Resistant Screws for Nortek Copper Post Caps are the official screws offered by Nortek designed to make removal of copper post caps harder without the correct tool. These screws are:
- Copper‑plated, stainless steel tamper‑resistant screws sized #14 × 1″.
- Designed to be used with special driver bits (e.g., a #14 spanner bit) so ordinary screwdrivers won’t work.
- Intended to be installed through holes you drill in the cap (typically three per cap).
- They help secure the cap to the wood post more permanently and deter casual tampering or unauthorized removal.
To install/remove these, Nortek also sells a matching #14 spanner bit that fits a power driver — special bits are necessary because a regular bit won’t engage the screw heads.
Why Use Tamper‑Resistant Screws?
Purpose and benefits
- Discourages casual theft or removal — people without the correct spanner bit are unlikely to undo the cap quickly.
- Cleaner look — fewer exposed fastener heads and less reliance on nails or glue only.
- Better long‑term hold — helps keep copper caps stable in exposed locations (e.g., docks, decks, high traffic areas).
Limitations
- No screw is truly theft‑proof — a determined person with the right tools can still remove them. Tamper‑resistant screws mainly deter casual tampering.
- You must use the correct driver bit — otherwise you can damage the cap or screw head.
