Check the Load Rating First

Building codes in most U.S. regions require deck railings to withstand at least 200 pounds of force applied in any direction. That number exists because railings take lateral pressure constantly—people leaning, kids pushing, groups crowding the edge of a second-story deck.

Before you buy, look for a published load rating on the product spec sheet. If the manufacturer doesn't list one, move on. A part without a published load rating hasn't been tested to a measurable standard, and you have no way to verify it meets code before it's already installed.

Match the Material to Your Climate

If you're working with aluminum posts and rails, use aluminum or stainless steel fasteners. Carbon steel screws driven into aluminum accelerate corrosion right at the contact point. Check the metal type on every fastener before you order.

Understand What the Post Base Actually Does

The post base anchors your entire railing system to the deck structure, and how it attaches affects how rigid the whole system is under pressure.

Surface-mounted post bases bolt to the top of the decking. They're easier to install, but they put more stress on the deck surface and can loosen over time if the hardware isn't torqued correctly. Through-post mounting runs the post down through the decking and fastens to the structural framing below, which creates a more rigid connection. For second-story decks or high-traffic areas, through-mounting is the structurally sounder choice.

Calculate Baluster Spacing Before You Buy

The International Residential Code requires balusters to be spaced so a 4-inch sphere can't pass between them. Some local jurisdictions require tighter spacing, especially on projects where young children will be present regularly.

Measure your total railing length, decide on your post spacing, and calculate your baluster count before you purchase. Buying too few and running short mid-project costs you time. Installing the wrong spacing and failing inspection costs you more than that.

Look for Powder Coating, Not Paint

Painted metal railing parts chip, scratch, and then rust outward from every exposed edge. Powder coating is a dry finishing process where electrostatically charged powder bonds to the metal before it's cured under heat. The result is a thicker, more uniform layer that resists chipping and handles UV exposure far better than liquid paint.

When you're comparing two parts at similar price points, check the finish type. Powder-coated parts typically carry a longer finish warranty because the process produces a more durable surface. That warranty length is the manufacturer telling you what they expect the finish to do over time.

Verify Component Compatibility Before Ordering

Posts, rails, and infill panels aren't always interchangeable across brands or even across product lines within the same brand. A cable rail system from one manufacturer uses a different rail profile than another, and glass panel infill has completely different post spacing requirements than a standard baluster layout.

If you're mixing components from different product lines, pull the spec sheets for both and compare channel dimensions, post spacing tolerances, and mounting requirements before anything ships. A quarter-inch difference in rail channel width can mean the infill won't seat properly, and you won't discover that until installation day.

Factor In Infill Weight on Existing Structures

Glass panel infill is heavier than cable or aluminum balusters, so the posts and deck framing must support a greater load. Heavier infill puts more downward and lateral load on the post base and the structural framing below it.

If you're retrofitting a railing system onto an existing deck, confirm that the framing can handle the added load before you commit to glass. A structural engineer can review the framing plan if you're uncertain. Swapping infill types mid-project because the framing isn't adequate is an expensive correction to make after the posts are already set.

Read the Warranty Document—Not the Summary
