What It Is
Tyvek DrainWrap is a weather-resistive barrier (WRB) that combines:
- Water-resistant housewrap — blocks liquid water from getting into wall cavities.
- Drainage channels — created by a textured/embossed surface that lets bulk water that gets behind the cladding drain down and out.
Unlike standard flat housewrap, DrainWrap provides a gap or pathway for water between the cladding (siding) and the WRB itself so moisture doesn’t linger against the wall assembly.
How It Works
Traditional housewrap like Tyvek HomeWrap is a continuous, smooth barrier. DrainWrap adds intentional irregularities or channels that force water to run down rather than stick. The rough side faces the exterior, creating space so:
- Rain that gets past siding can drain.
- Walls dry more quickly.
- Moisture-related issues like mold, rot, and corrosion are reduced.
Where It’s Used
Builders install DrainWrap in areas with high moisture exposure or heavy rain climates, including:
- Under rain-screen or ventilated siding systems
- Behind fiber cement, stucco, brick veneer, wood siding
- Homes in coastal or wet environments
It’s most helpful where water infiltration behind exterior cladding is a concern, helping protect structural sheathing and framing.

Tyvek® DrainWrap by DuPont is a building wrap specifically designed to provide enhanced drainage in areas subject to extreme, wind-driven rain. Tyvek®’s DrainWrap is a moisture barrier that combines the superior air and water resistance, vapor permeability, and strength of Tyvek® with a vertically grooved surface to help channel water safely to the outside. Tyvek®’s DrainWrap is designed to withstand the rigors of job sites with extreme weather conditions, proving its durability and strength. Compared to other textured moisture barriers, Tyvek® DrainWrap provides superior sustained performance in tests where bulk water was applied between a flat acrylic panel and the moisture barrier. As well, this product aids in energy conservation and building integrity. The unique non-woven fiber structure of Tyvek® 's DrainWrap prevents air movement through the walls, contributing to a more energy efficient home. Further, by effectively sealing the building envelope, DrainWrap helps to reduce the amount of energy required to heat and cool the structure. The DrainWrap may be eligible towards LEED points in the areas of Energy and Atmosphere. This material provides enhanced drainage behind claddings applied over flat substrates; primed wood (all six sides), fiber cement siding, and foam board.
