Tyvek RainVent Battens by DuPont
What They Are
Tyvek RainVent™ Battens are ventilated, polypropylene furring strips designed to be installed over a weather-resistive barrier (like DuPont Tyvek housewrap) to create a rainscreen behind exterior cladding. They replace traditional wood furring strips and help manage moisture and airflow behind siding or stucco.
Key Features
- Material: Durable, waterproof polypropylene that won’t rot like wood.
- Design: Ventilated profile with channels that allow airflow behind cladding.
- Dimensions: Typically about 3/8″ thick × 1 5/8″ wide × 8′ long, often bundled in packs.
- Lightweight & Easy to Install: Lighter than wood and easily cut with a utility knife or scissors.
Why They Matter
When installed over a water-resistive barrier like Tyvek, these battens create an intentional ventilated airspace between the sheathing and the exterior cladding (siding or stucco). That ventilated cavity:
- Encourages air circulation to help dry out trapped moisture.
- Reduces risk of mold growth and moisture damage behind the cladding.
- Helps protect wall sheathing and framing from degradation over time.
This rainscreen approach is a smart detail in high moisture climates or anywhere you want extra moisture control behind exterior finishes.
Typical Application
- Installed on top of Tyvek WRB (or another housewrap/WRB) before siding or stucco is applied.
- Battens are typically spaced vertically to align with studs and fastened through the WRB into framing.
- Cladding (e.g., wood siding, fiber cement board, stucco) is then secured over the battens, leaving a ventilated gap.

About this product…
Looking for a durable, lightweight alternative to wood furring strips? Tyvek’s RainVent Battens by DuPont may be just what you’re looking for! Made with a water-resistant, ventilated material, these battens act as an easeful option for people with all construction skill-levels. Not only are these strips more accessible to the average home-improvement customer, they also offer practical benefits as an alternative to using wood. The unique baffle design of these furring strips allows for both horizontal and vertical air circulation, making for increased airflow, reducing the chances of moisture damage or mold. In typical wood-framed wall construction, a DuPont Tyvek Weather Barrier is installed over sheathing. When installing these strips in residential construction, they are installed between the cladding or stucco system and the sheathing, creating increased airflow and drainage in these areas. The DuPontTM RainVentTM Batten is intended for use on stud walls with studs spaced at 16” or less and OSB or plywood sheathing.
