What It Is
A ball‑shaped wood finial from Nantucket Post Cap that’s made to attach atop a flat post cap or directly to the end of a wood post (deck posts, porch posts, railing posts, fence posts, etc.). It gives your outdoor posts a finished, traditional look and can elevate the overall style of your deck or fence.
Material & Quality
- Premium Western Red Cedar: Constructed from laminated clear Western Red Cedar, prized for its natural weather resistance and attractive grain.
- Craftsmanship: Finials are pre‑drilled and shipped with lag screws, simplifying installation.
Cedar is a common outdoor wood choice because it withstands moisture, insects, and mold better than many other woods when properly sealed.
Installation
- Seal Before Installing:Every surface of the finial — including the base — should be sealed with exterior‑grade primer, paint, stain, or preservative before installation to prevent cracking and extend life.
- Uses Included Hardware: Finials come with lag screws already installed. Simply screw the finial into the top of the post. Pre‑drilling the post top is optional but can help. You can also add exterior caulk at the base for a tighter fit.
Preparation:
- Nantucket Ball Finials are constructed of quality laminated clear Western Red Cedar.
- They should be sealed BEFORE installation with an oil base primer, paint, stain or preservative to ensure long life.
- These should be applied to all surfaces INCLUDING the base.
Installation:
- Nantucket Ball Finials are pre-drilled and shipped with lag screws for easy installation after sealing.
- The screws should be inserted first into the base of the finial using a pair of pliers around the smooth section (not the threads).
- Then thread the finial with mounted lag screws into the post. Pre-drilling the top of the post is optional and may aid in the installation.
- Exterior caulking material can be applied to the base to ensure a tight fit if desired.
