What Cortex Fasteners Are
Cortex is a hidden fastening system made by FastenMaster that uses special screws + matching plugs to secure deck boards from the top down while keeping the screw heads completely hidden once installed.
- The screws are high-quality deck screws with a TORX® ttap® drive (reduces stripping and improves drive quality).
- The plugs are material-matched to the decking boards (including AZEK PVC), so once tapped in, they nearly disappear visually.
- Also available are collated plugs on a strip to save installation time and make alignment easier.
How Cortex Works
- Drive the screw straight down through the deck board into the joist with a drill. The screw’s special head and setting tool help ensure it’s driven to the correct depth.
- Insert the plug (typically made from the same board material or color-matched) into the countersunk hole.
- Tap it flush with a smooth-face hammer — the screw head is now fully concealed.
This leaves you with a smooth deck surface with no visible fasteners — just color-matched plugs that blend into the board.

Cortex now comes with the following product enhancements:
- TORX® ttap® Drive System: This system is almost impossible to strip-out and the fastener is easily removed. In addition, the stability button keeps the fastener straight through installation.
- Modified Fastener: New thread design reduces installation torque and dramatically increases fastener strength. Length moves from 2-3/4” to 2-1/2”.
- Stronger Setting Tool: Optimized for extreme pro contractor use. Stronger bit material and industrial grade felt will enable you to install 350 fasteners on one Cortex Setting Tool.
