How To Get The Most Out Of Your Deck This Spring
Posted by Deck Expressions on Apr 15, 2019
Spring is here and many of you have been itching for warm weather and long days so you can spend time out on the deck. The last thing you want is for spring and summer to fly by and realize you hardly spent anytime out on your deck.
If you own a home with a deck, you likely treat it one of two ways: you are either always on your deck, or you sometimes forget itās out there. If youāre the latter of the two, donāt worry. We want you to get the most out of your deck, and if you currently avoid your deck like the plague, there is probably a reason why. Perhaps your deck is looking a little rundown or you feel like you just donāt have time to relax on the deck after a long day of work. If that sounds correct, donāt worry. Keep reading to learn a few ways you can make your deck more inviting and a place you will love to spend time.
How To Get The Most Out Of Your Deck This Spring
Clean Up
First, make sure to clean your deck up. No one wants to spend time on a dirty deck full of leaves and cobwebs. To make it easier, we even wrote a blog about deep-cleaning your deck for spring! Make sure to check it out and get your deck in tip-top shape so you have no excuse not to hang out on it. If you donāt feel like doing a major deep cleaning on your deck, consider at least giving it a good sweep and wipe down handrails.
Add Plants
When thereās still a little chill in the air, it can feel like spring has not fully sprung. To help with this, take some time to add a little bit of life to your deck. You can do this by potting a few plants around the deck to make it more vibrant. If you want to go a step further, add plants and flowers that are known to attract butterflies, hummingbirds, or other pretty wildlife.
Commit To Deck Time
Next, simply commit to spending time on the deck. If you have kids, maybe dedicate one evening a week to sit on the deck and play games. You can play board games or card games, or get a little more active with a game of charades or pictionary.
Other ideas include having at least one meal a week on the deck or even cleaning off the grill and cooking out on the deck during the week.
If you make plans to spend time on your deck, you will be more likely to actually get out there and enjoy the fresh air. Then, once you remember how amazing it is, youāll do it even more often.
Add Deck Lighting
Make sure your deck is a place where you and others want to spend time. One of the best ways to do this is by ensuring your deck is illuminated and comfortable even after the sun goes down. At Deck Expressions, we offer plenty of deck lighting options to fit any need and budget. Whether you want the soft glow of solar post caps or need a bright spotlight to shine on your grill, weāve got you covered.
Spruce It Up
If your deck is looking a little worse for wear, itās possible you need to do a few easy and quick upgrades to make it a more exciting and fresh place to be. Like we just mentioned, deck lighting is a great way to do this. You can also upgrade your deck balusters, add deck lattice panels to create unique features, install a new sound system, stain the deck to make it look new, or any number of other upgrades.
Even a small upgrade can make a deck feel fresh and new. If you need some ideas, make sure to browse our deck building materials as well as our blog for inspiration.
Keep The Bugs Away
The warmer weather in spring and summer is usually welcome. However, for those who live in areas of the country where flies, mosquitoes, bees, and other bugs become an issue during this time of year, spending time inside begins to seem more ideal.
You can deter bugs away from your deck by hanging sticky traps, lighting citronella candles, or using bug-repelling plants or plants that attract natural enemies of bugs.
